THE TSCO  5-YEAR TRUMPETER SWAN SURVEY

News Release

Preliminary Results – February 1, 2025, Coordinated Trumpeter Swan Survey

We are pleased to share the preliminary results of the February 1, 2025, coordinated survey of wintering Trumpeter Swans. The survey covered south-central Ontario, stretching from Windsor to Cornwall and north to Sudbury. Despite the harsh weather on the day, the survey was a great success.

A total of 232 participants registered for the survey, with 163 submitting data. These observers visited 366 locations, and Trumpeter Swans were recorded at 193 sites. Altogether, 3167 Trumpeter Swans were counted, comprising 2456 adults and 692 cygnets. This reflects a very successful 2024 breeding season and a strong, healthy population age structure.

In addition to Trumpeter Swans, observers reported 1,112 Mute Swans and 24 Tundra Swans.

Notably, the 2025 Trumpeter Swan count is approximately double that of the previous coordinated survey conducted in 2020 — a testament to the continued growth and resilience of the population.

Trumpeter Swan Conservation Ontario extends sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this important initiative.

Note: If you have data from the survey that has not yet been submitted, please do so as soon as possible.

Thank you once again,

Trumpeter Swan Conservation Ontario
